Railway infrastructure

The rail infrastructure provides a framework for rail travel. It comprises the railway network with its associated facilities such as stations, terminals, level crossings, tunnels, bridges, viaducts, overhead lines and railway protection and control systems.

The port of Antwerp is the largest Belgian and, after Rotterdam, the second largest European port. Because the port is located deep inland alongside the river Scheldt, it is one of the main hubs for European and international trade. Our port is still expanding rapidly. The share of containers in the port’s overall transhipment is gradually increasing. The construction of new container terminals should consolidate its position as a container port. The port section on Linkeroever (the Left Bank) has expanded considerably over the past decade following the commissioning of the Deurganckdok.

Obviously, this development goes hand in hand with an expansion of the transport infrastructure. The transport of containers to and from the European hinterland is still very much reliant on road transport. 30% of containers are transported through inland navigation, whilst only 8% is transported by rail. A seamless opening up of the railway network in and around the port of Antwerp could lead to an increase in container transport by rail. The general target is to evolve to 15% by 2030, which means that quite a number of new railways/tracks will have to be installed.

The expansion of the railway infrastructure in and around the port of Antwerp is happening. With our knowledge, expertise and long standing experience in this field, we are well-placed to provide advice and support to the various stakeholders in this sector.
